Gord

I was probably too young when they first started playing, not exposed and part of the phenomenon that were the Tragically Hips.

I don't think that anybody really knew, how much they were going to mean to us. No one really saw coming, the impact that Gord Downie was going to have on our lives.

I feel privileged, lucky and honoured today to have witness part of this journey. Gord Downie's late journey, was one that most of us will most likely experienced privately, with our close family and friends.

It is pretty amazing, that through his illness, he decided to instead care only for himself and be afraid of what was to come, to offer it to the world, to Canada and to the community.

He devoted himself to shine the light on the northern & aboriginal community of our great nation. A community that has been neglected by all of us. I'm not an expert and I certainly don't have all the facts to speak at length about this, but from my soul, I can see how our fellow Canadians have been left behind. Gord thought us that we need to do much more to make sure every Canadian feels included, everyone feels like they have a chance at life, and everyone feels supported.

I remember about a year ago, this interview of Gord and Peter Mansbridge on CBC. It was my first real look at Gord's as an individual. I was listening to him, talking about his life, about his illness and the journey still left in front of him.

What I saw was not a man getting ready to die. I saw a man showing his soul to us, a man so at peace with himself that he wanted to kiss Peter Mansbridge on the mouth, because he knew in that exact moment, that each person he would met would have significance. Each person that he would encounter would have a story to tell, and they would be bringing so much to his life.

Now that I look back at that moment, when I was watching this interview, I realize. I realize that he opened my heart by the millions. Opened my heart to compassion, opened my heart to discovery, opened my heart to adventure, opened my heart to inclusion, opened my heart things that I yet know to be possible...

This life is not a dressed rehearsal, it's not a cliché. The Tragically Hip were certainly on to something. Gord Downie was definitely Ahead by A Century.

Let's keep his legacy going for at least another one. You in? I sure am!
