White privilege.
I do suffer from it.
I was born in a small community in New Brunswick. All of my classmates were white. All of my teachers were white. All the folks in my community were white. Oh yeah, expect that one girl.
We didn’t know any better. I didn’t know any better. We were all alone. We didn’t get exposed to it.
When we saw a person of colour or of other ethnicity, it caught out attention. We all looked towards that person’s direction. We all made assumption.
I then went on to University. The diversity on campus was present and for me, coming from a white DOMINATED community, it was a big change. Diversity was composed from all genders, all ethnicity, from all Colors, from all différents countries against the world.
It took me a while, so it did I would say for my white caucasian colleague to adapt. I am now wondering, how did our colleagues from another ethnicity fell joining our ranks, coming to a portion of our country that is dominated by white people.
I mean, I have to admit, I was uncomfortable at first, and I was in the majority. Our culture is based on white successful people. When you watch a movie, the bad guys are portrayed by folks of other ethnicity and colour. Society as a whole, is brainwashing us to look for the stereotype and the difference between us and them.
I’ve had many friends in my university life that came from so much different backgrounds than I did. Did they challenge my way of thinking? They did so much. Did they open my eyes to different cultures, religion and beliefs. They did. They changed me forever and for the better.
14 years after graduating university, I am sorry to say that I am not surrounded in my work environment by people other than white Caucasian Canadians. We have adopted other countries, other cultures, but none of them are people of colour. Most of them are white men, you can barely say women.
I come from a background where I had yes work to get where I was. Where is was a challenge to be a female in a men dominated industry. I know the challenge of having to go against the grain, and having to work much harder because of it.
It was hard for me, but it’s not has hard as people of colour or different ethnicity. This is my white privilege.
I watched George Floyd get killed, by state police officer, who didn’t give a shit about this human being life. I watched George Floyd get killed, like he DID NOT MATTER.
For god sake! This has to stopped. For god sake, I will speak up because I have the privilege to be able to do so. HE WAS DENIED HIS!
